this photo is of my brother lying down in the road and his friend sitting just behind him on the curb, about to take a picture. his camera has this red light it always shines just before a picture is taken, maybe auto focus or something, but its shining directly into my camera here. it took a rather long exposure to get this, i think a full second, so there isn't a way to get this image except with a camera. i guess the 'fundamental element of composition' would be shape since i don't think the picture would really come together at all if it didn't have the triangle shape formed by the two lights and my brother and the other dark triangle in the bottom right corner of the image. the way these two shapes work together is really important.

looove this. im really drawn into the composition and i agree with you about the two triangle shapes. im amazed at how much the lights of the friend's camera look like streetlights. i think you captured an awesome sense of lighting as well. the way light is hitting the leaves of the tree is beautiful.
The simplicity of the photo really hits me. I really like how you got a good sense of perspective by shooting at such an angle close to the floor. It really draws your eyes up and then you discover the redness of the lights contrasted with the background image of a charming little house. There's a nice calm somber feeling to this photo.
This picture seems very whimsical to me. The sense of depth and the colors communicate a seperate universe to me. The foreground feels tangible, while the background seems like the backdrop of a play, or movie. i feel like im there.
I really agree with Brian..you feel like you're in the picture because of how close the angle is to the ground. You feel as though youre lying on the pavement as well. Really nice use of lighting, simple and yet very evocative.
I believe that the prionciple element in this photo is dominance. The vivid red light contrasts the dark muted tones of the house and street. This contrast, along with the fast that we view red as a "power color" in our society, makes the red light the focal point of this composition.
The way the picture flows through the way the lines are set up is very pleasing to the eye. Everything flows very nicely and seems to connect, which results in your eye being able to move around the whole picture evenly. I also think the element of rhythm is strong in this piece. Beacuse one thing flows to another, it seems balanced also. The colors are very simmilar and somwhat dim which makes the photo pull all together and seem harmonious.
Dan--the placement of your camera so close to the sidewalk or road gives us a much more prominent sense of that texture than normal, which immediately throws the whole image into something surreal, as if that space is just some kind of flat area and not really a sidewalk of any kind. Good description of the balance of your two triangles in the image. I would have loved to have seen the figure being a bit clearer to read, but perhaps this is where the small size of images on this blog really don't work for communication a lot with your image. Good job
